Let’s help to unlock some jazz with our new monthly radio show all about jazz in Leeds, Leeds clubs, musicians and jazz fans! Welcome to the new weekly Jazz Unlocked programme on East Leeds FM. https://www.chapelfm.co.uk/elfm-player/

Presented by Steve Crocker from Jazz Leeds and engineered by Tony Mauluso from Chapel FM the show keeps you in touch with the jazz scene in Leeds during the lockdown. We have a broad definition of jazz so we’ll be including blues, big bands, and more along the way. Jazz Unlocked will feature 60 minutes of interviews, album recordings, and specially recorded performances

Leeds is a great place to play and listen to jazz – before the lockdown there were more than twenty venues where you could hear regular live sessions and the city has some of the finest jazz musicians in the UK too and we’ll be hearing from some of those people in the coming weeks.

The first show on 16 April celebrated international jazz day and featured and interview with Leeds bass player Adrian Knowles, leader of the band “Sound of 59” with a live session from Jennie Smith (vocals) and John Chamberlain (piano)

The show on 21 May– main feature was an interview with trumpeter, big band leader and record producer James Hamilton with a live session from pianist and vocalist Nicki Allan

The June 18 show featured a lockdown solo session from Leeds based pianist Chris Lloyd, some archive material from sax legend Pharoah Sanders and an interview with Vipertime/World Service Project frontman Ben Powling

The July 16 show will feature an interview with Leeds pianist, composer and educator Jami Sheriff from Leeds College of Music, with Mark Beirne Smith from Ilkley Jazz Festival about the release of the album “The Yorkshire Jazz Suite”

Live on 94.6m on FM in Leeds and surrounding areas
