Chapel Allerton Festival + Jazz Leeds present this year’s Village Jazz Festival.

We start with the Big Easy swing band on the Thursday 30 August @Seven Arts featuring the swing music of the 20’s and 30’s with the greatest tunes by the giants of swing; Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, Nina Simone and many more household names, added their own interesting arrangements to bring you a set of the finest swing tunes (at Seven Arts 8pm) Support is from Jazz Vocalist Emily Brown with her band of Jason Scott on piano, Richard Hammond bass (a rare treat these days!) and Steve Green drums

The Friday evening 31 August “Lloyd Plays Peterson” @School of Philosophy, Woodland Lane  (7.30-10pm) Leeds pianist Chris Lloyd pays homage to the Canadian jazz giant Oscar Peterson – playing the Steinway Grand Piano! Chris is a devotee of the late Canadian jazz pianist Oscar Peterson – called the “Maharaja of the keyboard” by Duke Ellington. He was considered one of the greatest jazz pianists, and played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years. It will be good to hear Chris playing some of OP’s tunes on the Steinway grand piano at the School of Philosophy in Woodland Lane. Chris Lloyd piano, Adam Richards bass, Ric Colley drums. At 9pm the event will be followed by a jazz café jam session – all welcome – bring your instrument or your voice!

On Saturday 1 Sept we have a late afternoon jazz masterclass @Seven Arts (5-6pm) led by Julian Argüelles.

The headline festival act @Seven Arts on Saturday 1 Sept 8pm is the quartet  led by saxophonist Julian Argüelles. With an impressive reputation for presenting world-standard post-bop that now spans three decades, Argüelles’ current quartet features the UK’s best young talent namely; Ivo Neame (p), Sam Lasserson (b), James Maddren (d). Currently on tour promoting his 15th CD as a leader, “Tonadas” (on Edition), which features strong musical influences from Argüelles’ Spanish roots. The Quartet are inspiring & adventurous and come highly recommended to anyone who gets pleasure from listening to music: jazz or otherwise. Argüelles has been described as a composite of Charles Lloyd and Wayne Shorter. Throw in comparisons to that of Holst, Elgar and Finzi, some Spanish folk and South African grooves, and you pretty much have the makings of “a joyous listening experience”.

Support is from Alice Higgins and “Tiptoe” one of Jazz North’s “Northern Line” featured bands with  Alice on vocals, Will Blackstone trumpet, Conall Mulvenna guitar and Roz MacDonald double bass. Vocalist Alice Higgins with an intimate trumpet-guitar-string bass group playing fresh swinging perspectives of the music of Ella Fitzgerald to  Michael Jackson, as well as their own songs in a warm, relaxed vein.

The Sunday afternoon 2 Sept open air concert of jazz blues and salsa bands @Regent Street 12.30-6pm will get you dancing!
