Leeds Jazz Festival event: ArchiFrisco + Chris Sharkey solo

archfrisco

Sunday 21 July Recital Room 219. Doors 3.30, music 4-6pm

The second of this year’s “Fusebox presents” is a concert featuring ArchiFrisco, the coming together of avant-garde jazz trios J Frisco and Archipelago. Their concert will be preceded by a solo improv. set from guitarist Chris Sharkey.

J Frisco are Jemma Freese, Keyboards, Lara Jones, Saxophone and Megan Roe Guitar; they create improvised genre-fluid soundscapes and noise drawn from emotion, political, and gender issues. They thrive on challenging both their own and their audiences perceptions of time, space and sound.

Archipelago fronted by Faye MacCalman are a Newcastle sax-bass-drums trio drawing on garage rock, minimalism and free improvisation: riffs, silence, noise and grooves create a collage of hard-edged blocks of sound that evolve over the performance. John Pope is on electric bass, Christian Alderson drums and Faye MacCalman saxophone.

‘The Archipelago J Frisco ‘superband’ began as a commission for Lancaster Jazz Festival in 2018 bringing together some of the most exciting musicians to emerge from the northern creative scene. ‘Escaping to Us’ is a string of songs composed by Faye MacCalman, focusing on the connection between light, colour and sound through tonal explorations of clashes and stillness, minimalist riffs and improvisation.’
