Take your chance to get ahead of the latest trends in jazz by coming to hear the up-and-coming stars of the jazz scene! Typically, these gigs are an opportunity for final year jazz students to practice their immanent final recitals in a friendly public setting.

This year, our first concert will showcase:

The Joe VDM quartet is an eclectic modal jazz ensemble taking influences from classic players such as Coltrane and Henderson as well as modern players like Nubya Garcia. Bandleader Joe has played all over Leeds and London with bands such as Plantfood, The Sunkissed Child and 2/22. Joe van der Meulen (tenor sax), Hayden Wood (bass), Ruben Maric (keyboards) and Finn Hamilton (drums).

The Dan Pattenden Quartet combines found sound, noise music and traditional jazz styles. Heavily influenced by James Newton, Bobby McFerrin and Dan Mayo, the quartet also uses electronics and samplers to create layers within the music, playing with and without listening. These collaborators aim to create an overlap between music, audio and sound. Martin Waters (tenor sax), Myron Evans (piano), Guy Bathgate (bass) and Dan Pattenden (drums).

‘Speaking Evil’ will be playing their new original material ahead of upcoming recordings and performances. The quintet’s music takes compositional inspiration from music of the mid to late 1960s such as Wayne Shorter and Lee Morgan, while incorporating a modern and rhythmic twist setting their music firmly within the modern jazz idiom. Harry Stobart (drums), Martin Waters (tenor sax), Edward Tahourdin (trumpet/flugel), Per Alexander (guitar) and Guy Bathgate (bass).

Last year’s event was stunted by us slowly easing out of the third lockdown, but the young performers came through with some fantastic sets. Here is the first of these sets, livestreamed in full on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/jazzleeds/videos/853351878857481

And here is the brilliant Else Skogan’s quartet playing ‘Alice in Wonderland’ in 2018:
