Take your chance to get ahead of the latest trends in jazz by coming to hear the up-and-coming stars of the jazz scene! Typically, these gigs are an opportunity for final year jazz students to practice their immanent final recitals in a friendly public setting.

This year, our second concert will showcase:

Drummer Maeve Thorpe has made her way into the vibrant Leeds jazz scene playing in The Goddess Collective and the Sophie Grace Quintet, also depping in bands, most notably the Hyo Jung Trio. Thorpe has a love for ECM and contemporary jazz, taking influence from artists like the Joshua Redman Quartet, the Keith Jarrett Trio and Bill Stewart. The Maeve Thorpe Quartet features Gustavo Andrade (tenor sax), Ben Gilbert (piano) and Fergus Leach (bass).

Electric bass player Fergus Leach hails from Kendal in the Lake District. Fergus has been making waves in the Leeds jazz scene’s biggest venues with myriad projects: Elusive Dip, Hyo Jung Trio, Olivia Cuttill quartet, fireside and Nox Quartet. Leach takes influence from jazz contemporaries such as corto.alto, BADBADNOTGOOD and Matthew Halsall. His band features Haydn Morrow (drums), Ruben Maric (keys) and Gustavo Andrade (tenor and soprano saxophone).

Drummer Haydn Morrow has been regularly gigging in Leeds with bands like Elusive Dip, Harry Moon and the Cardboard Rocket, India Newland, and his own quartet, as well as depping for Plantfood among other bands. Taking inspiration from Athletic Progression, corto.alto, BADBADNOTGOOD and Abstract Orchestra, Morrow harbours a love for playing jazz, hip-hop, fusion and Afro beat. The Haydn Morrow Quartet features Gustavo Andrade (saxes), Ruben Maric (piano) and Fergus Leach (electric bass).

Last year’s event was stunted by us slowly easing out of the third lockdown, but the young performers came through with some fantastic sets. Here is the second of these sets, livestreamed in full on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/jazzleeds/videos/5460363824006269

And here is the group Morpher performing some beautiful electronic jazz back in 2018:
