Sunday afternoon Jazz Oct 20: Kathrine Windfeld Sextet (Denmark) 1.30pm @Seven Arts

Katherine Winfeld By Stephen Freiheit

Part of this autumn’s women in jazz series, pianist Kathrine Windfeld has quickly established herself on the European jazz scene with her outstanding skills as composer and arranger.

Having been described as one of the names of the future by the likes of The Guardian (UK) and Downbeat (USA), multi-award-winning pianist and composer Kathrine Windfeld is a welcome breath of fresh air on the European jazz landscape.  She formed her sextet in 2011 – it performs regularly in Denmark and Sweden.

Her original compositions are a rare combination of delicacy and strength. Using a colourful palette of sophisticated harmonic passages, driving grooves and poetic ballads, she enriches the traditional jazz ensemble sound with a new spirit. With her critically acclaimed two big band releases, ‘Aircraft’ (2014) and ‘Latency’ (2017), Kathrine Windfeld’s name has fast become known, well beyond the borders of her Scandinavian home.

She has picked a sextet of young and excellent Scandinavian musicians, who effortlessly combine playful precision with enthusiastic power and improvisatory prowess.

Kathrine Windfeld – piano, Rolf Thofte – Trumpet, Jakob Lundbak – Alto, Marek Konarski – tenor, Johannes Vaht – bass, Henrik Holst Hansen – drums

“Windfeld’s band of leading young Scandinavian musicians is as tight and sharp as any you’ll hear” The Guardian
