A welcome back to this group by bassist Adrian Knowles that were such a hit at last year’s Jazz Leeds Festival. They celebrate a pivotal year in jazz history. 1959 was special – it saw the release of classic jazz albums by Charlie Mingus, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane and many others. “Sounds of 59”, led by bassist Adrian Knowles and featuring some of the best of jazz musicians from Leeds, recreate the music with both music and visual displays.
They combine the calm of cool jazz with the passion and fire of hard-bop, and explore rhythmic intricacy and free jazz along the way.
Seminal albums they touch upon include:
Miles Davis – Kind of Blue
Charles Mingus – Ah Um
Dave Brubeck – Time Out
Horace Silver – Blowing the Blues Away
Bill Evans – Portrait in Jazz
Ornette Coleman – Shape of Jazz to Come
Support (7pm) is from GSAL student Lucy-Anne Daniels who will perform a short set of Jazz standards and some more contemporary tunes. Lucy-Anne is currently performing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and is holding offers to study Jazz at both Birmingham Conservatoire and Berklee College of Music, Boston MA.
