Popular voluntary-run jazz promoter based mainly at Seven Arts in Chapel Allerton, North Leeds.

Started in 2007 by jazz fans Steve Crocker and Steve Ross, Jazz Leeds is now a major UK jazz promoter, based at Seven Arts, a beautifully designed acoustic venue in Chapel Allerton, Leeds.

JazzLeeds are an art and music charity with a year round programme of over 150 concerts, jazz festivals, jam sessions and workshops. We promote a mixture of international, national and local musicians and a wide range of music from contemporary through to traditional jazz with some blues, latin and big bands as well. 2023 is our 16th birthday year. In 2012 we won the Jazz Yorkshire award for best jazz venue and in 2016 the national Parliamentary Jazz award for best UK jazz promoter.

Our programme includes

  • Evening and Sunday afternoon concerts with international, national and regional jazz artists.
  • Two jazz venues – Seven Arts (main venue) and Northlight (workshop venue)
  • Jazz Cafes where we encourage people to participate in music making.
  • The Leeds Jazz Festival in May where we put on jazz  at city centre venues
  • Village Jazz Festival in early September – part of the Chapel Allerton Arts Festival.
  • Jazz Workshops for people who want to learn to play jazz and a jazz choir for singers.
  • Work with schools. We  ran a pilot project with Roundhay School in autumn 2022 to help them start a Jazz Band and offer a taster day of music making to young people in the school who do not usually get involved in music. In 2023/4 we will involve two more secondary schools in Leeds with a view towards a city wide project after that to help encourage jazz music tuition in schools.
  • We acknowledge the financial support and assistance we receive from Leeds City Council through the Arts at Leeds scheme, Leeds Conservatoire, Leeds Jazz Festival and most recently the Mohn Westlake fund for our education projects. In the past we have also received funding from Jazz Yorkshire, Leeds Inspired, Jazz North, Northern Jazz Promoters and Arts Council England.
  • Jazz Leeds charity has a board of trustees including Steve Crocker, Steve Ross, Rosemary Holmes, Karen Gourlay and Ramesh Narayanan and our student Trustee Sophie Speed. We have a large group of volunteer supporters who help us in running our events.

  • We are always looking for help – just come to one of our gigs and offer!
