A high-energy, authentic tribute to legendary British jazz icon Tubby Hayes

Doors: 7.30pm Music: 7.30pm

The Simon Spillett Quartet, led by the multi-award-winning tenor saxophonist and biographer Simon Spillett, performs a high-energy, authentic tribute to legendary British jazz icon Tubby Hayes. The repertoire features deep-dive compositions and arrangements from iconic Hayes albums like Tubbs in New York and Mexican Green.

An all-star band too with Pete Billington (piano) Alec Dankworth (bass) Pete Cater (drums)

Arguably the legendary figure of post-war British jazz, and an integral part of the story of British Jazz, Hayes died tragically in 1973, but has left a rich legacy of recordings, compositions and arrangements which continue to inspire.

None has been more inspired by Hayes than Simon Spillett.  Multi-award-winning tenor saxophonist and author of the definitive Tubby biography, The Long Shadow of The Little Giant, who together with his quartet, featuring fellow British jazz heavyweights has put together this celebration of the genius of Tubbs, featuring compositions and arrangements from Hayes albums The Jazz Couriers In Concert, Tubbs in New York and Mexican Green, together with standards and ballads associated with the great man.”

“Simon Spillett never fails to impress. With a technique that outstrips most of his contemporaries (with each hearing he appears to add an extra hundred notes per phrase). And yet, these aren’t mere hip arpeggios but meaningful use of the tools at his command”” — Derek Ansell, Newbury Weekly News
