Rod Mason's Quintet pay tribute to masterful jazz improvisers - guitarist John Scofield and saxplayer Joe Lovano

John Scofield’s guitar work has influenced jazz since the late 70’s and is going strong today. Possessor of a very distinctive soundand stylistic diversity, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, funk edged jazz, and R & B. His albums with sax player Joe Lovano included the legendary Blue Note album “Time on My Hands” in 1990 and the most recent one “Past Present” in 2015

Rod Mason  has played with many of the country’s main jazz stars including Alan Skidmore, Peter King, Don Weller, Art Themen, Guy Barker, Gerard Presencer, Steve Waterman, Jim Mullen and Mark Nightingale. He has played in Europe and featured at many Jazz Festivals. He started playing the saxophone aged 12 during his 2nd year at secondary school. At University he formed with others the Northern Jazz Orchestra which played throughout the North at festivals and other venues, Rod was the M.D. for 2 years. His influences are people like Michael Brecker, Kenny Garrett, Jan Garbarek and of course Jo Lovano. Rod also tends to be influenced by guitarists, the main one being John Scofield.
