On International Jazz Day on Thursday 30 April at Seven Arts we celebrate the jazz genius of Stevie Wonder

Doors: 7.30pm Music: 7.30pm

On International Jazz Day on Thursday 30 April 7.30pm at Seven Arts we celebrate the jazz genius of Stevie Wonder with music from the classic 1973 album “Innervisions” performed by the Chapel FM Jazz Collective conducted by Dave Evans.

The music includes a wide range of themes and issues, from drug abuse in “Too High”, through inequality and racism in “Living for the City”,  to love in the ballads “All in Love Is Fair” and “Golden Lady”. “Living for the City” was one of the first soul music songs to deal explicitly with systemic racism and to incorporate everyday sounds of the street, such as traffic, voices, and sirens.

Chapel FM Jazz Collective is an exciting young band playing arrangements of jazz, neo soul, funk and big band music with some original compositions. Dave Evans has a long association with the Chapel FM Jazz Collective going back to the days when that band was based at Garforth as the Garforth Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra. Today their home is the Chapel FM Arts Centre in Seacroft and CJC is a unique combination of established musicians and younger artists seeking to learn from playing in a big band format

As well as the music of Innervisions the concert will also include other huge hit compositions by Stevie Wonder where you will have the opportunity to join in with the Chapel FM Ensemble. Dave will have some invited guests along too!

International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; and reinforce international cooperation and communication. Each year on April 30, this international art form is recognized for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity, and respect for human rights and human dignity. International Jazz Day is chaired and led by the UNESCO Director-General and legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who serves as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and Chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz.
