Bassist Sam Quintana's band features off-kilter grooves, infectious melodies and spontaneous improvisationDoors: 1.30pm Music: 1.30pm
Wandering Monster reaches beyond what may be expected from the tried and tested line-up of the tenor saxophone/guitar quintet. The band’s original compositions, penned by double bassist and leader Sam Quintana, draw from a love of American and European jazz, rock and world music.
Expect a sound that’s intense and raucous, yet sensitive and intellectual, with off-kilter grooves, infectious melodies and spontaneous improvisation. Audiences can expect a dynamic, spontaneous and energetic live performance synonymous with the city’s roster of innovative artists. Having emerged onto the national jazz scene, Wandering Monster is part of the exciting wave of young artists operating in the UK today.
Since its inception the band has become an integral part of the thriving Leeds scene and with the release of their recent album Zenna, they have undertaken a 14-date UK tour showcasing a dynamic live performance synonymous with the city’s roster of innovative artists.
‘Leader Sam Quintana’s writing is mature and evocative, and the standard of musicianship is remarkably high throughout… Quintana himself shines with a double bass solo that combines deep sonority with great dexterity and a strong melodic sense-‘ Ian Mann, The Jazz Mann
…there’s a maturity and generosity in each other’s musical company that makes Wandering Monster just a little special — Andy Robson, Jazzwise.
